Addictions
It used to be that an addiction was to something like drugs or alcohol, not any more. Now iphone apps are being compared to addictions, and I heard about WOW having all the symptoms of one. People losing jobs over it, people dying from doing it and even people having withdrawal symptoms to it. This is kind of sad. The most amazing is that people are becoming addicted to apps. How this is possible is beyond me.

I don't usually watch much TV but since my dad works in television, I occasionally check out some of the shows he works with. He was watching a show yesterday called Kidnapped in which two children kidnapped their father because he spent too much time at work (he even slept there most nights of the week!). They forced him to take them on holiday and confiscated his phone so he had no contact with the company that he owned. The father had an extremely difficult with this and was constantly wondering how his business was doing. He started freaking out after a short while because he couldn't stand to be away from the office for so long. Like drugs, alcohol, and now apparently iPhone apps, he was addicted to his company. It's almost frightening the things people are addicted to... and interesting how technology plays a big role in this.
ReplyDeleteI think technology can take a lot of blame for a deeper problem, though. Technology is really only the means by which people are getting to what it is the they are really after - eg. work status and success or entertainment.
